Tutorial is available | Wednesday 08 September 2004

I have created the animated tutorial for using FTP program to transfer big files. This usage is reserved for Dengue group between ChaingMai and MMBU. Please click the link to download the tutorial file. The zip file has been protected by password. Please send me an email (s_prapat@yahoo.com or suriyaph@cng.fr) to request the password. It is protected because in the tutorial, I have told the password to account the FTP server. You can download Filezilla by clicking at the link.

How to transfer big files via Internet | Monday 06 September 2004

It is not convenient or even impossible to send a big file as an attachment with an email. In fact, there has already been a solution for a long time but surprisingly it is not well-known as webpage. What I'm talking about is File Transfer Protocol or FTP. One advantage of using FTP is the resume function. This is more important where the Internet connection is unreliable. Let's imagine that you are sending or recieving a 100MB file and it has already been 98% finish. Then the connection breaks. If you are using normal web download, you have to download everything at the beginning. With FTP, you just resume at 98% and continue for there.

I'm writing the manual how to do it. This can be opened to public. I'll create an account to share files between Dengue group. Please be patient. I'll finish it in the weekend.

Picnic at Monsouris park | Sunday 22 August 2004

Last Sunday, we, Thai people here, had a nice picnic at Monsouris park not far from my apartment. The weather was nice, the food was really good, and we all enjoyed ourselves very much. I have taken some photos and would like to share with you here. It is not much because I dared not to spend too much time taking photos or there would be no food left for me. Enjoy!!!

Open magazine | Saturday 21 August 2004

Today I have finished reading a Thai magazine named "Open". The look of magazine itself is not really attractive. I would have said that I wouldn't pick it up if I saw it on the shelf of a newsstand. Aj Anavaj lends it to Zern (another Ph.D./M.D. student who share apartment with me). It turns out that I'm the one who finish it first. The articles are written by many authors; some of them are well-known. It introduces me many sides of stories I thought I have known them all. It is quite worth to read. I'll recommend the publisher to make it digital. The magazine should be able to reach more targeted people by that way.

Teleconference via Internet | Wednesday 18 August 2004

Communication has always been a crucial part of success formula, but it often costs dearly to have it. Now, with the connection via Internet everywhere, there must be a better and cheaper way to communicate. There are many softwares available specifically for this task but they are expensive. If we adapt and accept some drawbacks, we can shift to other cheaper softwares that may do the job. Talking via Internet has found a solid grond and the quality is good. Moreover, there are many free software for that. But talking is not enough. It would have taken you too long to describe a diagram. In this case, you'd better move to a drawing board software. In this case, remote access software can also do the job. You allow others to see your screen and use your mouse. Now, your computer works as a drawing board. Just fire up a drawing program and all participants can join. Not a bad idea, isn't it?

Nature Magazine and Science go Digital | Sunday 15 August 2004

As predicted, major players in scientific journals, Nature and Science, are moving to digital form. Science chooses zinio reader and Nature chooses NewsStand. I have 1 sample issue from Science and 3 copies of Nature. I got an email from Nature and I applied for testing. It turned out that I am chosen. I expect that I can get more issues of nature for free. You can go and download files from my download page. To read, you will need proper reader for that. Personally, I prefer zinio format. I'm so sorry but I have just found out that NewsStand has protected the contents and they can be viewed only on the machine that download it. I'll find out whether there are some ways to overcome this.

Alexa from amazon.com | Friday 13 August 2004

Today, I checked my webstat and found something strange. Googlebot visits everyday as usual but there is also a new strange webbot. Thanks to the good web analysis provided by my web hosting. I searched for the information (google as usual) and found out that it was the webbot from amazon.com. I think amazon are doing another campaign. Perhaps it sees how good search engine can drive traffic. It also provides the search box as you can see.

And I can provide the search which limit to my site with the following search box

Digital magazine | Tuesday 10 August 2004

The time for Digital magazine has come. The technology as gone so far that you can read magizines with the feeling not much different from those real paper format. The digital form has some additional advantages though. One is the instant access. No need to visit the news stand. Just click and the magazine is ready for you to read in seconds. You can search, bookmark and manage it in the way that is impossible in paper format. The price is extremely much cheaper. I can't believe it that 22 issues of PC Magazine at the cover price of $125 are sold at $9.99 at www.zinio.com. One disadvantage of digital form is that you cannot lie down on your back and comfortably read it from your notebook.

Googlebot | Sunday 08 August 2004

It works!!! Since 03 August 2004, google robot comes to visit my site everyday. This means that google will daily index my content. There are so many things to learn about Internet.

I'll try to put in more useful information. I may change the template as well to make it more unique for each topics.

Another prank for my curiosity | Wednesday 04 August 2004

Please don't be surprised if you see ads on my page. It is another trick to let google search my site. And I always wonder how this kind of thing works.

My website can be searched in google!!! | Tuesday 03 August 2004

This is very delightful. It is the same feeling when your article has got published for the first time. Even though, the keyword is not perfect. You must use 2 keywords to really reach my website. They are "prapat" and "mmbu". It is a good start.

Paris Plage (Beach in the middle of Paris) | Monday 02 August 2004

Another web gallery is online. It is Paris Plage festival. They create a beach at Seine river and allow Parisian and tourists to enjoy the sunshine. Please take a look here.

Note: I have also included video. Some are pretty big even though I have also compressed them. The compression is DIV X. So you'll need DIVX encoder to watch it. I recommend you to use a free video player, vlc media player. I have been reported that windows media player doesn't work. So please save the video file first and open it with vlc media player. If you have any problems, please contact me at s_prapat@hotmail.com.
